After a personal crit with Sadie, she suggested that I should try
hand rendering the 'lyrical' of type the logo. Firstly I drew the
type out as if it were a signature. This style emphasises the
creative / / expressive aspect not only of the zine, but also poetry
in general. I then moved on to a digital rendering with a
graphics tablet.
I tried using different thickness brushes, different styles (i.e.
calligraphy) to try and get the expressive yet intelligent vibe
i'm looking for.
Above are the five different styles i've decided to develop further.
All look like scripted decorative type however, they have different
attributes that strengthen the concept behind the whole project
with subtle changes, i.e,
The counters of the 'y' and the 'l' are reflected, giving a sense of
structure to the word that heightens the idea of experimental
structure of type and layout with regards to the content.
However, the fact that the word looks scrawled means that there
is clear distinction between the logo and the structured content.
There is also a problem with legibility of letterforms. The word has
to be able to be read. The whole point of an educational zine is to be
read. In justification for lack of readability, the content is much more
important and should be readable. Much more so than a logo, as it
can be recognised as an image.
The logo above is much more like a signature. The letterforms shrink
down and lengthen out towards the end of the word. I imagine this to
work better with the type 'extension' underneath because of the baseline
being more even.
