Tuesday 2nd November,
We were asked to experiment with three dimensional letterforms. We had to choose a letterform (ours was 'O'- a decision we would later come to regret) then experiment with different segments of that letterform across a space- for example, the Channel 4 sequence:
So we began by creating a 'viewfinder' that would make it easier to focus in on the space we were playing around with. Here we have stuck one fragment of the letterform to the viewfinder.
We then decided to change our idea of working on the tables and walls and go for a vertical approach. The idea was for the letterform to be hanging from the ceiling so the viewer has to look up at it. Here we are measuring the gap needed between them so we can start cutting the areas we needed from them.
That idea failed so we opted for the simple version that wouldn't confuse us immensely. Here we have just used the table, spaced the parts of the letterform out and below is what we have created.
At first it sounded like a totally simple idea, but I think we got too ambitious and couldn't work with that. I think the letterform 'O' is a difficult one to use because it is a whole shape rather than letterforms such as 'K' and 'N' which have specific aspects you can take apart- it's more obvious where you should detach areas. However, i'm just happy we eventually managed to create an idea that worked. It's a testament to the fact that things are not as easy as they look.
