Research:
I looked below the article on The Guardian website and found a forum style area devoted to opinions on the article above. Nearly every single one of them was obviously against what has happened. However, this opinion was flat-out against everyone else.
I then hear about the most recent 'Dispatches' documentary by Channel 4 named 'Iraq's secret war files'. It was essentially an extension to the article I was reading, with a lot of extra information highlighted on the overall statistics of the war.
I checked out the coverage over in the U.S and there was predictably very little on this whole issue.
-Apart from the criticisms against Wikileaks as above. I think it's totally crazy how it was pretty much on the front cover of every newspaper in Britain, putting it across with a main theme of deception and horror, and then you have the total opposite in America with everything censored. There seems to be no outrage towards the irony of the whole situation, yet there is so much against Wikileaks- it's just totally warped to me.
Design Ideas:
I think the illustrated version of this symbol gives a good idea of what i want, however, i think it looks unprofessional and inconsistent. The 'Illustrator' version of the symbol is a lot more consistent and in my opinion has a much cleaner finish to it. I created this by tracing the outline of the drill a few times- changing the degrees slightly each time. I then duplicated this and rotated the grouped drills to give a full circle. I think it looks harsh and ambiguous, which created a certain intrigue into what exactly you are looking at.
As I have annotated. I think ambiguity within an image generates a lot of interest. I think the ambiguity of the whole symbol creates interest yet also reflects how the general public feel about being deceived by the government. It is confusing and there is so much to look at. Much like they have been given so much information about all of these people who have been tortured, its kind of like an information overload of bad things.
I wanted to experiment with colour and layout. I think that because this is such a complex symbol it should be on its own within the frame to intensify the attention placed on it.
This was a mistake on Illustrator- I wanted to change the colour of the symbol but instead this happened. However, I like it. It definitely makes it more clear that it is created out of drills. I dislike the fact that it no longer looks like an eye because there is no overlapping between them.
TEXT
I think that given the 2:1 ratio within this brief, straight, centralised type would work well. Above i have experimented with different weighting and point size. This puts the focus on the more important words that make the message more effective.
